Chapter 23: Urgent: How to deal with seniors who want to be my apprentices
Inabayama Castle, Mino Province
At a time when people had long fallen asleep, inside a room of the Inabayama residence, Saito Sakon no daibu Toshimasa was staring intently at the void without turning on a light.
In the silent room, a sudden voice was heard.
"What was that?"
It seemed to be a question, but it was one that he had no intention of asking anyone. That's why he didn't call for anyone to his bedchamber, he needed to confirm something. So he talked as if he was having a conversation with an invisible person.
"... Not bad. You made a name for yourself."
He slightly breaks down his sitting position and glances up as if hoping to see something. However, there is nothing but the ceiling. And as you know, ceilings have no ears.
"It's frightening not to know, to be in the dark. Above all, we're only human beings, with lacking abilities. And that's the most terrible."
With a hand on his chin, he now looked diagonally down to the right. It took him a good quarter of an hour to get rid of the slight internal scuffle.
"But if I don't take the risk, I won't be able to get what I want. As long as there's profit, I'll hold on to you even if you're a demon, Shinkuro."
i'm confused, the first part seems like he was talking about his son, then he talks like he's hyping himself up to do evil, i'm guessing he's plotting to usurp since it should be happening in an few years, but i don't get the first part, is he talking about the lord or his son? and who's shinkuro? this is guesswork and off topic, but i bet he starts to think his son is his lord's, because of him being paranoid, and feeling guilty. the mc kills his father because saito was planning to kill the MC after setting the MCs 2 younger brothers as heirs, and the mc escapes and live like an peasant like he wanted too, since he's supposed to "die from illness" making his death pretty spotty, and saying he has leprosy can let the mc cover him face up, making his escape easy.

So I guessed that he was talking about his son from start to finish. It's pretty confusing even for me now that you said that... :')
But he's talking very vaguely, so it's hard to make sense of what he's doing. One thing is clear, though, is that he's suspecting Sinkuro, his son.
rereading it makes much more sense now, but wow the mc has a lot of names, yoshitatsu(before changed timelines), Shinkuro, Toshinori(result of mc's tampering(i'm guessing he can be called by both names)) and his kid name, Toyotamaru, along with Kousuke, his og name.
