Chapter 14 Part 1 - Since I was reborn as Saito Yoshitatsu, I'm aiming to hand over the territory to Oda Nobunaga and live longer!
1536 (Tenbun era, year 5)
TL: Yuina Inabayama Castle, Mino Province
It was before my coming-of-age ceremony, but in fact, I have accumulated many good things in the medicinal herb garden for Chinese medicine.
First, the growth of Hydnocarpus is going well. I have to do my best to make it live longer. It also needs careful maintenance. If it starts bear fruits, I must keep them from being eaten by birds.
Pruning wasn't an easy task, so I needed scissors. When I was introduced to a blacksmith and asked for scissors, I was shown a U-shaped pair of scissors in the sewing set.
Apparently, modern scissors didn't exist in Japan at least at this time period. So I tried to covey the shape I wanted with a poor sketch. I taught him curtly about the screw structure, but I've learned it in an anecdote about guns. [1] Well it will be okay.
Second, some plants in the Chinese medicine fields can now be harvested. The annual plants are doing well. Some of them failed last year because the soil did not fit, but this year I tried various things such as changing the quality of the soil by sprinkling a bit of lignite, or planting it in places with different sunlight, and thus succeeded in several cases. I must be able to cope with all kinds of diseases at this rate. The construction of the herb garden is going well.
Third, I have made friends of the same age. Even if we're friends, I don't think that they'd be so casual about my status. By the way, they are two girls and one boy.
The trigger was the flood of the Nagara River. Because of that, the land was damaged, and the territory handed over by my father was also damaged. I heard from Yabei, who is a village chief, that there were children who no longer had food to eat, so I decided to hire them to help me with my work.
"I'm Shinshichi, sir! I'll do anything for you!"
"I'm Toyo. Please, feel free to order me around!"
"Um... I'm Sachi... I will do my best."
Shinshichi had a lively and honest personnality. Although Toyo was a little stiff, she had a bright atmosphere. Sachi was calm and of few words.
"I'm Saito Shinkuro Toshinori. Please, take care of me."
Can friends really be hired? It's okay, I wanted someone to talk to, and to have friends of the same age.
My purpose is to let them help with the herb garden while studying reading and writing together, attending training, and supporting them.
Every day I tried hard to make them take a holiday;
"Oh, do you no longer need us?"
Toyo was on the verge of tears, so I gave up. I wonder if Japanese people have had a deep-rooted corporate spirit since this era. This will require a lot ofpatience. Aiming for a modern society with a 20-day consumption rate of 100% in-house pay. Well, I'm going to leave it all to Nobunaga.
After Nohime was born, and when I hired these three people, it made me realize that I was in deep need of soap from a sanitary perspective. Since it is a chemical that we learned in science class, I can make it with lime, volcanic ash, or wood ash, mixed with some oil.
Soapberry seems to be used in some places, but it is hard to get it. I have no choice but to make it. I want people who are close to me to be hygienic and clean. We must preserve cleanliness to live a long life. We must steadily improve our environment step by step
[1] The first matchlock brought to Japan in 1543 was the matchlock that the Portuguese brought to Tanegashima. In history lessons, 1543 is taught as the year of the introduction of guns.
However, at that time, there was something that was brought to Japan for the first time along with the gun. That is the screw.
