Chapter 9: Omi's Peace Negociations and the Shugo Toki Yorinari ➀

 Inabayama Castle, Mino Province

Upon hearing Toyotamaru's account, Sakon no daibu Norihide  realized that he couldn't simply ignore the matter, both as a father and as a feudal lord. He decided to investigate all the kilns on the continent. It was then that he found someone who claimed to have seen the same type of kiln Toyotamaru had mentioned, particularly in Korea.

Apparently, this was a recently introduced technique from the Ming Dynasty, and he resolved to gather more information about it.

In the solitude of Inabayama Castle, Sakon no daibu found himself deep in contemplation about Toyotamaru.

(Toyotamaru's reputation among the clan is rather favorable. Being the offspring of a concubine gifted to us by the Toki clan, he has gained support, particularly from those assimilated into our clan from the Nagai family and the retainers who have joined us from the Saito clan.

Even the Akechi and Tsumaki factions hold a positive opinion of him. This is attributed to his efforts in researching Ming Dynasty literature to assist with the pregnancy and childbirth of my legal wife [1], as well as the promising discussion regarding useful techniques for Tsumaki's pottery.)

Physically, he stands out among his peers, boasting a larger stature. It seems that his morning exercises have contributed to his remarkable flexibility and skill in martial arts, earning him great acclaim.

(It's still quite early, but... should I have him undergo his coming of age ceremony upon inheriting the Saito clan? As a worst-case scenario, I could have the legitimate heir inherit the Nagai family, and let Michitoshi's [2] son take over the Nishimura clan [3] to avoid potential backlash. Whoever it is, if they possess such exceptional abilities, I should utilize them to the fullest.

Furthermore, if I alone rapidly accumulate too much power, it will only invite opposition, won't it?)

[1] Saito Dosan's legal wife was Omi no Kata. She is said to have been born in 1513 during the Sengoku Period (Period of Warring States) as a daughter of Akechi Mitsutsugu , the lord of Akechi Castle in Mino Province. In short, she was from the Akechi clan.

[2] Nagai Michitoshi is Saito Dosan's brother and Toyotamaru's uncle.

[3] Nishimura is Saito Dosan's father's surname. The Nishimura clan is basically what Saito Dosan is ruling over now: (from the Japanese wiki page of Saito Dosan)
Afterwards, Shogoro, who harbored a desire to become a samurai, approached Nichinun, also known as Nichigobo, at Mino Jozai-ji Temple and successfully gained his support. With the help of Nichigobo, Shogoro became a retainer of the Nagai clan, a vassal of the Tōki clan, who held the position of deputy shugo (military governor) of Mino Province. Shogoro adopted the name Masatoshi and inherited the family name of Nishimura, becoming Nishimura Kankuro Masatoshi.

  2. i just realize in this novel how Dosan actually have in-Law relation with Akechi clan, in Oda Nobuna its never mentioned and other manga/novel like this with focus of Oda Nobunaga often gloss it over and hardly mentioned about Akechi Clan background, well there also me who hardly have any interest about Akechi Clan

    1. Haha, I also don't think these details would be important for the story, but it's still interesting to know.
Also, I've just remembered, Nishimura is one of Saito Dosan's father's names... Why do they need so many names and titles... :'(

    1. And thankfully, I didn't find very diverging versions this time when I did my research.
