Chapter 23 Part 4 - Since I was reborn as Saito Yoshitatsu, I'm aiming to hand over the territory to Oda Nobunaga and live longer!
1537 (Tenbun era, year 6)
TL: Yuina Inabayama Castle, Mino Province
The days of agony go on.
"I haven't seen you in ages. Nakarai Kunai Taifu Roan, here."
"It's really been a while. Thank you for that time."
The one who came to visit was the doctor who examined me when I was just reincarnated, Dr. Nakarai Kunai Taifu Roan. Because he was originally born in Mino, his disciple had diagnosed me when I just came to this world, and he had come from Kyoto to examine me once afterwards.
This time, he came back here to his hometown with his two sons following behind him. I had a bad feeling about this.
"I have come this time to ask you for a favor."
"I don't know what business it is, but if you need anything, I think my father would be more qualified to help you."
"No, Shinkuro-sama is the only one who can help me with this matter."
My bad feeling was getting stronger. Yes, I can smell more overtime.
"I would like you to train my two sons here, Shinkuro-sama."
"I am still so young and inexperienced, I'm sure they'll be able to receive a better education under Kunai Taifu-sama's supervision."
I refused him politely and with a slight embarrassment. I don't want to become a joke, having apprentices older than me. Don't you know that such responsibility is a source of stress? And even if I develop depression due to stress, I can't ask for a leave of absence in this day and age. Then, my father's notice of dismissal would probably be the end of my life. I'm sure he wouldn't want to support such a burden, like myself.
"I, too, studied Ming medicine. However, I'm not familiar with the surgical technique that Shinkuro-sama practices."
That must have been a technique that did not exist yet in this era. The opposite would have been odd.
"I also heard that you ordered some medicinal plants from Ming. I've got permission from the Governor General, so can you please train them?"
In the end, my father, who had come later, agreed, saying that it would increase the prestige of the Saito clan. Both of his sons were members of the Buddhist sect, the elder brother went by the name of Nakarai Jurin and the younger one by Nakarai Zuisaku. The older brother was very interested in learning the latest Ming medical techniques, but the younger brother was not so convinced about learning from a master younger than himself, and it clearly showed in his attitude.
"It was nice to see you again, Shinkuro-sama!"
"... Same here."
I'd like to know how to deal with these brothers without accumulating much stress. As a reward, there must be a substantial increase in my allowance.
If I had to teach them new medical skills, my overtime hours would surely exceed the death line, again...
Author's Note:
The word "surgery" was born in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. It was derived from the word "sore" (or wound).
Medicine at that time seemed to be divided into obstetrics (so-called "maternity care"), surgery, wound medicine (sword wounds, etc.), and internal medicine.
It seems that ophthalmology and oral medicine were added to these categories around the lifetime of Manase Dosan.
Whew. Living in this household is like working as child labor in some obscure sweatshop somewhere in a third world country. MC will probably die young... again... which is a shame.
