Chapter 21: Let's go to Rokusai Market!

The water wheel-type beater added to the Naginata beater papermaking machine was completed around autumn, and it shortly became very popular and well received.

After the invention was shared among three artisan families, the production of Japanese paper soared, and even increased fivefold. This was because there was no longer much physical labor to do. The work of disintegrating the fibers, which used to be assured by the entire family, was reduced to just two people watching over the progress of the work, as the waterwheel did all the job.

However, my father gave the order to encourage the cultivation of paper mulberry in his territory because the mulberry, which was the raw material used for the Japanese paper, was running short even though there were only three artisan families benefiting from it. Thus, it was decided to start cultivating the said plant in the village that he was in charge of. In the Saito clan's territory, there were still no established techniques for growing sprouts and the like, so I also have to do something about that in the future. The harvest from this fall can last for a whole year, the increase in production will not be effective until the year after next. Until then, we have no choice but to find a place where natural mulberry trees grow. The quality will be slightly lower, but it can't be helped.
