Chapter 19: Isn't this a perfect put-up job? The first battle

Shinowaki Castle, Gujo County, Mino Province

On a certain day in November 1536, I was ordered by my father to take back Ikehara Castle in Gujo County, this will be my first battle. I'm still only ten years old. Isn't that too early. In fact, it can only be said that it is too early. Even the debut of a child actor takes into consideration working hours, time constraints, and broadcasting time... This is why the Sengoku Period is so harsh.

Ikehara Castle is one of the branch castles of the Tou clan that was lost in the previous attack of the Asakura. The Castle is difficult to attack because it is located deep in the mountains, it's a natural stronghold blocked by rivers from the west and south. The Tou clan defended Shinowaki Castle, a key fort in the surrounding area, from the Asakura, but the damage from trying to regain all the surrounding branch castles was too great, so Ikehara Castle was abandoned.

It seems that the Asakura clan was not keen on defending it, and there was only one general, belonging to the ranks of the infantry, guarding the castle.

It should be a good opportunity for me as a first battle.

I looked surprisingly good in my armor, and I wasn't that much shorter than the others.

At the moment, my height is less than four inches short of five feet. In centimeters, I'm about 138 cm. There could be a margin of error because that's just an estimation. Nevertheless, it's already pretty big considering that I'm just 9 years old. Even for an adult, it is normal to be a little over 5 feet tall (155cm). It may be hereditary, but I'm not getting enough calcium and vitamin D. I compensate for this by eating fish and kikurage [1].

However, with the presence of my Kosho, Okuda Sanemon Toshinao, we ended up becoming a conspicuous group.

Tou Tsuneyoshi, the lord of Shinowaki Castle, was in a good mood when I greeted him the day I arrived at the castle. My father will bring 1,500 soldiers and take back his territory. You'll soon be in an even better mood.

[1] Auricularia auricula-judae, known as the Jew's ear, jelly ear or by a number of other common names, is a species of edible Auriculariales fungus found worldwide.
While not widely consumed in the west, A. auricula-judae was used in folk medicine as recently as the 19th century for complaints including sore throats, sore eyes and jaundice, and as an astringent. Today, the mushroom is a popular ingredient in many Chinese dishes, such as hot and sour soup, and also used in Chinese medicine. It is also used in Ghana, as a blood tonic. Modern research into possible medical applications have variously concluded that A. auricula-judae has antitumour, hypoglycemic, anticoagulant and cholesterol-lowering properties. (thank you wikipedia :v)
