Chapter 5: The Viper's Poison is Painless

Kagehiro, the only remaining son of Nagai Nagahiro who had come of age, and Nagahiro was my father Sakon no daibu Norihide's former lord. From 1517 to around 1530, Toki Yorinari Sakyo no daibu (Master of the Eastern Capital Offices), and Toki Jiro Masayori, had a big fight over the position of successor of the Toki clan, and Mino's Governor (Shugo). At that time, the majority of the Nagai family, which was a Kohugodai [1] (deputy shugodai) family, sided with Yorinqri and drove out the shugodai Saito clan. To prevent further instability within the Nagai clan, Kagehiro was pardoned and chosen to succeed, and we were given the surname of Nagai to assist him.

Sadly, the recently-appointed head of the Nagai family, Kagehiro, passed away. It is believed that he was fatally struck by an arrow from an unknown assailant during a hunting expedition.

In all likelihood, it was a murder case.  Suspicion initially fell upon my father, Sakon no daibu Norihide, since he'd be the one most likely succeed Nagai if he ever met his demise.

However, such suspicions were dismissed based on the samurai code of conduct, as it was considered unthinkable to engage in such actions while mourning for one's father. Moreover, if Norihide had any intention of taking over the Nagai's name, he could have done so when Nagahiro was assassinated. The question of why he didn't act at that crucial juncture remains a mystery.

This uncertainty arose after overhearing a conversation among servants in the corridor. It seems that they underestimated me because I was just seven years old, and the fact that no one was around when on my way to the lavatory was also fortunate.

After the mourning period, my father, Sakon no daibu Norihide, attended the court and reportedly suggested to Toki Yorinari, Sakon no daibu, that Yasaburo, the legitimate son of Nagahiro whom they had defeated in rebellion, should undergo his coming-of-age ceremony and take his rightful position as the new head of the Nagai clan. Furthermore, he reported that one of Saito Tatewaki Saemon no Jou Toshishige's trusted aides, who had fled to Echizen Province together with Toki Jiro Masayori, was making frequent incursions into Mino's territory. What their true intentions are, one can hardly fathom from an outsider's perspective.

[1]  Shugodai were representatives of provincial shugo when the shugo could not exercise his power, being often away from his province. Unlike shugo, who were appointed from the central power, shugodai were locally appointed. And Koshugodai were deputies of shugodai.
