After completing the council meeting, Sakon no daibu Norihide returned to his quarters and let out a low chuckle.

"I never thought it would go so smoothly."

"Never did I imagine that you would even inherit the position of Saito's Shugodai, let alone me becoming the head of the Nagai clan, elder brother."

Beside him, his younger brother, Nagai Hayatonosuke Michitoshi [1], responded.

"I was hoping to secure the Nagai clan's leadership without any resistance, and it seems the heavens are on our side."

"I had assumed that either the offspring of Saito's collateral, Toshitada-dono, or Kagehiro-sama's younger brother would be appointed as the Saito's Shugodai."

"Considering that Toshitada-dono's lineage had drifted too far from the Shugodai position, I had contemplated whether to appoint him. However, I must say, Kagehiro-sama's timely demise has worked in our favor."

Those cryptic words seemed to vanish into the ceiling, beyond the reach of anyone other than the two brothers.

"Very well, I shall handle the negotiations with the Kyogoku clan according to elder brother's arrangements."

"Please do. I'll personally speak with the Azai and Rokkaku clans. The Asakura clan still hasn't recovered from the fight against the Ikko sect in Kaga [2]. The head of the Shiba clan is just a puppet, and the Oda clan beneath them is mired in internal strife. It's the opportune moment.."

"I understand. With this, we will have firm control over most of Mino. But from now on, we must proceed cautiously."

"Indeed. Acting only for immediate gains might lead to future losses. We must carefully calculate our benefits while considering the long term."

[1] Nagai Michitoshi served as a bushō during the Sengoku period.  Michitoshi first served as the lord of Takegahana Castle and, later, Kaneyama Castle, in Mino Province.  His common name was Hayatonosuke.  He was a senior retainer for three generations of the Saitō clan (Saitō Dōsan, Saitō Yoshitatsu, and Saitō Tatsuoki) operating in the central and northern portions of Mino.
Michitoshi was born as a son of Saitō Dōsan, the lord of Inabayama Castle in Dōsan’s early years.  There is a theory that, following the birth of Yoshitatsu, Michitoshi was deemed an illegitimate son of Dōsan or younger brother of Yoshitatsu.  There are also theories that he was either a younger brother of Dōsan, a grandson of Nagai Toshitaka, or son of Nagai Nagahiro given that he inherited the surname of the Nagai family.

[2] Kaga - former province located in the south of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture.
